The firm’s origins go back to 1861 and it has operated, in various versions , at the same address of 82 Argyll Street ever since.

Many of the documents held in its strongroom are recorded in the National Archives of Scotland as historically significant – for example, the ancient title deeds for Toward Castle. The eponymous Major Bennett was a shareholder in a business which ran two Daimler 8 seater open wagonettes to and from Sandbank. It is believed that the first motor accident in Argyll occurred on 16 March 1898 outside 82 Argyll Street, when one of these vehicles collided with a horse-drawn carriage. It is not known whether any of the lawyers rushed out saying: ’Had an accident?.....’
